What’s a Broom Tree?

In 1 Kings‬ ‭19‬:‭4‬-‭8‬, the Bible tells of Elijah fleeing to the wilderness in fear after learning Jezebel intended to kill him. In his overwhelm, Elijah sits under a broom tree and pleads with God that he might die. After sleeping, an angel wakes him with some bread and encourages him to eat. This cycle of sleep, awakened by an angel, eat bread happens a second time and with the strength regained, Elijah is able to continue on with the mission the Lord had for him.

Broom trees were desert bushes, sometimes called juniper trees, and as you might assume with the word “bush”, they weren’t large. Just large enough for some modest shade. In both instances where a broom tree is specifically referenced in Scripture, we see a moment of overwhelm followed by practical needs being met and in that, God moves in a way only He could.

Coaching is like that. Sometimes in our overwhelm, we need a friendly voice to remind us of the things so practical that we might overlook them. Goals can be overwhelming and scary, but you don’t meet goals all at one time. It’s a million tiny steps toward the goal that allow us to meet it. What is it you need to work towards? Better boundaries? A growth mindset? Feeling less guilt for saying no? It is my hope that with Broom Tree Coaching, I can be the friendly voice encouraging you with practical steps to nudge you forward.
